Many gadgets and methods have come before the Venom to attempt to solve the age-old problem of getting and keeping your charcoal lit. When using the Venom, most of these other tools and setups become obsolete. Using 3rd party accessories or fancy charcoal setups with the Venom controller can affect the performance and temperature control of the Venom. Follow these tips to get the best results when using your temperature controller.
Simple Setups: The simplest charcoal setup is usually best. We recommend making a tight pile of your favorite charcoal and adding fire in the form of a firestarter or other lit coals. Then, set your venom to your desired temp, follow the recommended vent settings, and let the Venom's fan do the work. We particularly recommend avoiding the "snake" method for charcoal. Not only does it take a lot more time and effort to set up, but the variable fire location and charcoal amounts as it burns will result in unstable temperatures. Plus, the Venom does what the snake method does, just better.
Avoid Charcoal Enclosures: We have found that most charcoal enclosures (the Slow-N-Sear inserts and other baskets) restrict airflow from reaching the charcoal and cause unstable temperatures. We recommend removing these types of third-party accessories if you are experiencing large temp swings or otherwise unstable temperature control.
